Thanatos
"Thane"
26 / Hench Tribe / Scott Eastwood
Valentin [Half-Brother], Daemon [Father - Deceased], Tehya [Mother - Deceased]
Personality
Upon first meeting Thanatos most others believe he is a cold and serious tom. His words never seemed to have any emotion to them and his face always seems to have a blank, uncaring expression on it. When someone attempts to talk to him they find that his responses are always short and to the point. He doesn’t leave any space for chitchat. Not many still try to get close to him since it seems to be a pointless cause. He appears to have no interest in anything but doing his job as an assassin and thief for the Hench tribe. Anyone who did manage to get to know him better would realize that his issues go much deeper than just being cold towards others.
Thanatos isn’t cold and emotionless towards others because he is unfriendly or mean, but for far darker reasons. Having spent most of his life confined in a den by a father who hated him and used any reason he could think of to beat him, such as showing any emotion, hindered his emotional and social growth greatly. Eventually his mind learned to shut off his emotions as a way of protecting himself from his father’s wrath. It was mistakenly believed by his father that he no longer had emotions, but the truth of the matter was that they were just buried deep inside of him where they were hard to get to. Spending such a large portion of his life young life without experiencing emotions properly meant that he couldn’t recognize emotions coming from others unless they were extreme enough to be obvious even to the oblivious. It also meant that when his emotions finally did start to resurface inside of him, he had no idea how to handle them.
So far the only time his emotions ever resurface within him is when his younger brother is involved. Since he has so little experience with his emotions when they do resurface they are usually extreme and he tends to act impulsively because of them. He has never learned how to properly handle them, though his brother has been attempting to help him with that. His younger brother is the only person he has ever gotten close to and because of that he is extremely attached to him. Like his emotions, his social skills have also suffered because of the way he was treated growing up. He has never interacted with anyone outside of his family and some a few other members of the Hench tribe. He doesn’t pick up on social cues and a lot of things that are considered common sense tend to go right over his head.
History
The story of Thanatos begins before he was even born. His father, Daemon, was born into the Hench tribe and was one of the most loyal cats in the tribe. Though he was often sent out to commit crimes for the Hench Tribe, he was actually a fairly decent and kind cat towards those who were not enemies of his tribe. He met the love of his life on his way back to the tribe after completing his most recent crime. The beautiful feline had been lounging on the front porch of her human’s home. Having instantly fallen for her, Daemon went out of his way to visit her frequently in the following weeks until he was finally able to convince her to leave her humans behind and join the Hench tribe. After joining the tribe, Thanatos’s mother Tehya began assisting her mate in completing his assignments despite the fact she believed committing crimes was wrong. She was deeply in love with Daemon and wished to assist him in anyway that she could. For the first time in his life Daemon began to consider leaving the Hench tribe. He had been a loyal member his whole life, but after discussing plans for starting a family with his mate he realized the Hench tribe may not be the best place to do that. After Tehya became pregnant with their first kitten, Daemon decided he would go out in search of a new home a few weeks after the kitten would be born. Sadly there would never be a new home or life for the happy couple.
The night Thanatos was born was the darkest of the year. The labor was long and hard for Tehya, but when her son was finally born a soft smile appeared on her face. Her son was the last thing she saw in this world before she slowly slipped away into an eternal sleep. Upon discovering that the love of his life had died from complications giving birth to their son, Daemon became increasingly distressed. His mind could not handle the loss of his mate and upon waking the next day after passing out from stress the night before he had become a new tom. The kindness that had once shined brightly in his eyes was gone and in its place was only darkness. Thanatos, who he once thought to be the miracle born from his and Tehya’s love, was now seen as nothing more than a killer. A killer who had taken his beloved Tehya away from him. When he looked upon his newly born son again there was nothing but hatred there for the small kitten. The thought of killing the newborn right then and there crossed his mind, but in the end he decided on a more satisfying option. He would raise his son to be the killer that he was born to be. Daemon would ensure that the young kitten would grow up to be a valuable member of the Hench tribe while also making sure his life was pure hell. It was the only way Daemon felt he could get revenge on the monster that had taken his mate from him. He bestowed the name Thanatos on the young kitten. A name which meant death.
As his father had vowed the night his mother died, Thanatos’s life was a miserable one. His father was constantly coming up with new and horrific punishments to use on him. These punishments were given anytime he did something wrong, showed emotion, or if his father just felt like hurting him. When he was old enough, his father began training him to be an asset to the tribe. He was told often by his father that becoming a valuable asset to the tribe would be Thanatos’s way of thanking his father for allowing him to live. Training consisted of learning different fighting techniques and stealth. The young tom trained hard knowing that if he did not his father would make sure that he was severely punished. Despite training to the best of his ability, it was never good enough and in his father’s eyes it never would be. The result of his father’s training and punishments made Thanatos into a capable fighter, but it had also stunted his emotional growth immensely. He felt little to no emotions and was almost completely incapable of reading the emotions of others. His father believed that having no emotions would in the end make him a better killer.
When Thanatos was still young, about 10 in cat years, one of his father’s many lovers gave birth to Thanatos’s half-brother, Valentin. It was the first time Thanatos had ever seen a kitten before as his father often kept him confined away from most others. Meeting this young kitten caused something to click inside of the young tom. The kitten and its mother, Mika, moved in with them shortly after the birth. The queen paid zero attention to Thanatos, not that he wanted her attention anyway, and spent much of her time out with some of her other queen friends. The little bit of free time Thanatos had was often spent just staring at his little half-brother Valentin. The young tom didn’t understand why he was so interested in the young kitten and why he always felt so relaxed when around him. Having been so emotionally deprived his whole life he couldn’t understand that what he was feeling for the young kitten was brotherly love. Thankfully for a short time his father remained oblivious to the attachment that Thanatos had developed for his younger brother. His father would not remain in the dark forever though.
It was a day not much different than any other. Thanatos’s father was due to return home from his most recent job and Mika was once again out with her friends. It was always a relief when his father was sent on a job, but Daemon was not given jobs very often. As usual, Thanatos found himself watching Valentin, who was now about 5 in cat years. His eyes would closely watch the young kitten as he played around. He still did not understand why he felt so attached to the kitten. The sound of footsteps approaching the den caused Thanatos to tear his eyes away from his brother for the first in order to see who was here. It was getting close to the time his father was supposed to be back, but from what he could tell there was more than one cat approaching. In the next moment Mika entered with one of her queen friends. The two queens paid no attention to Thanatos as they made their way over to Valentin. His eyes narrowed as he watched his little brother stop playing to greet his mother and her friend. The young kitten was always eager for his mother’s attention though she treated him more like a favorite accessory than a son. While watching the two queens sitting on the ground laughing and playing with Valentin, a familiar smell reached Thanatos’s nose. It was alcohol. His father was not a stranger to drinking and during those times that he came home drunk Thanatos discovered he was even more aggressive than normal. Thanatos watched as the game the queens were playing with Valentin became less innocent than how it had started. The queens took turns pushing Valentin towards each other, often causing the weak kitten to fall to the ground. Mika and her friend seemed to find the kitten struggling to his feet each time amusing and their pushing gradually became rougher. One last hard push from Mika caused Valentin to fall to the floor again, but this time an unpleasant crack like sound could be heard when the kitten hit the floor. Thanatos may not have been familiar with emotions, but he was familiar with injuries. He could tell that his brother’s paw was broken with just one glance at it. His brother’s wails seemed to fall on deaf ears as the queens continued to laugh. For the second time in his life, Thanatos felt an emotion. This time it was not love. It was pure anger. Having never been accustomed to emotions meant that Thanatos did not know how to keep them under control. When he felt the sudden urge of anger swell in him at the sight of his injured brother and the laughing queens that had caused it there was nothing he could do to stop his next actions.
When his father finally returned that night he would discover Mika and one of her friends had been slaughtered by Thanatos. Aside from the broken paw caused by the two queens, Valentin was completely unharmed. It was also discovered the next day that Valentin had passed out from the pain of his broken paw and had not seen Thanatos kill his mother and her friend. Realizing that the young tom he had been training was now showing emotions that he was not supposed to feel because of his younger brother, Daemon decided to use that to his advantage. After plenty of severe punishments Thanatos was mostly back to his normal emotionless self, though it was still evident he cared for his brother. Eventually Daemon began to take Thanatos on jobs with him, promising to punish Valentin if Thanatos made even the smallest of mistakes. This, to his father’s satisfaction, made Thanatos accomplish each of his jobs perfectly. As time passed Thanatos was eventually allowed to go on jobs without his father there to observe him. Most of Thanatos’s jobs consisted of assassinating enemies of the Hench tribe, though he was also occasionally sent out to steal valuable items from time to time. The thought of killing his father in order to protect his younger brother didn’t cross his mind. That is until his father went just a bit too far.
By the time Thanatos was about 20 in cat years and Valentin was about 10, Thanatos was a fully recognized member of the Hench tribe. He quickly found himself his own den away from his father, taking his younger brother with him. Though he was now living on his own he still found himself under his father’s complete control. He still went out and completed each job he was given perfectly and without complaints. One day, however, instead of going straight back to the tribe after completing his job like his father told him to, a couple of toms that had worked with him on the job dragged him off to go drinking with them. Though he turned down all the alcohol that was offered to him, the other toms were able to spike his drink without him realizing it. When he woke up the following morning after passing out drunk in an alley with the other toms he knew that when he got back to the tribe his father would be waiting at Thanatos’s den to punish him. Except when he returned to his den he discovered that the punishment his father had planned wasn’t like the ones he had experienced before. His father’s punishments usually consisted of beating Thanatos or Valentin, but when Thanatos entered his den this time another tom was waiting there with his father. With a cruel smirk on his face his father informed him that he had sold Valentin to his ‘friend’ for the night. Spending most of his life in a den, training, or on a job, Thanatos had no clue what the meaning behind his father’s words meant. Valentin however, despite being fairly young still, knew exactly what their father meant. Unlike Thanatos, Valentin had been allowed out when he wasn’t being punished for Thanatos’s mistakes and had made plenty of friends. Through his friends he had learned all about life and the world, so he did not miss the horrific meaning behind his father’s words.
The desperate screams coming from his brother as the other tom tried to drag him out of the den, alerted Thanatos to the fact that something was seriously wrong. He wasn’t good at reading the emotion of others, but when they were as obvious as his brother’s fear was at that moment he didn’t need to be good at it. The anger he felt back when he had killed Mika and her friend after they injured his brother quickly surfaced inside of him. The brief time that his father had made the mistake of turning his back to Thanatos to assist the tom in dragging Valentin outside was all it took for Thanatos to close the space between himself and his father. Before the older tom could even turn around, Thanatos had snapped his neck, killing him. Thanatos’s father’s friend stared in horror as Thanatos killed Daemon. When Thanatos’s gaze moved from his dead father to the other tom, the tom quickly released Valentin and tried to make a run for it. The tom was obviously not in the best physical shape and it did not take long for Thanatos to catch up with him. Lacking the element of surprise, it was a bit more difficult for Thanatos to kill this tom. The two scuffled on the ground for awhile before Thanatos managed to strangle the tom to death. Looking down over his body after the fight he found that he did not come out of it completely unscathed. There was a deep gash on his chest from the tom’s claws, but thankfully it was not lethal just a bit painful. When he returned to Valentin’s side he allowed his younger brother to cling to him while he cried, using that opportunity to make sure his brother was uninjured.
With his father’s death, Thanatos realized he was free to do whatever he wanted. Unfortunately life in the Hench tribe was the only thing that Thanatos knew and so he remained there. When Valentin was old enough to live on his own, Thanatos told him that he could leave if he wanted, but Valentin refused to leave his brother behind. Thanatos continues to work tirelessly as an assassin for the Hench tribe. His father’s death went unnoticed, or at least nobody cared, in the Hench tribe. Now that he has more freedom than he ever had in his entire life he isn’t exactly sure what to do with it.
Notes
Thanatos has been trained in different fighting techniques and stealth. The fighting style he was trained in was Jijitsu, which teaches one to use their opponent's own strength against them. While he is a decent enough fighter he relies more on his stealth for his jobs. His jobs for the Hench tribe usually are to steal valuable items or assassinate anyone the tribe wants dead. Though his emotions are still mostly absent for the most part they are slowly beginning to surface more often. Aside from his father, Thanatos has never killed a member of the Hench tribe. Mika was a housecat that his father met and made his lover. The others were all strays that his father or Mika had befriended.
