As the sun began to set over the city, the sky turned shades of orange, red, and even a hint of pink. In the sky high above the moon was already visible though the light it gave off dimmed in comparison to the setting sun. The streetlights all began to flicker on as the city prepared for the oncoming night. Cars zoomed by on the streets as their occupants made their way home after a busy day or work. The residential area which had mostly been quiet during the day while the families who lived there were out was now bustling with life.
A small, spotted tom slowly made his way down one particularly long residential street. Though his eyes stared ahead of him it was obvious to anyone passing that his mind was elsewhere. Valentin had spent most of his day at the home of the only human that had ever managed to befriend him. The man was an inventor and while most humans were forced to leave their homes each day to go to work, his office was in his garage. His garage door was always left open which was how Valentin had first discovered him. Upon walking down the street one day with no particular destination in mind his attention had been drawn to the garage where loud noises could frequently be heard coming from. When he had seen the man working with all different types of things, Valentin’s interest had been piqued. From that day forward Valentin would often visit the older man in order to watch him experiment with his different ideas and soon found that he enjoyed the company of the human as much as the man seemed to enjoy his.
Now that the day was ending and the man was finished working, Valentin was making his way back towards his den. His thoughts were on the item the inventor had been trying to create today. He wasn’t completely sure what it was, but it fascinated him nonetheless. As he continued on down the street, a throbbing pain suddenly spread across his body. It wasn’t too bad, but it had been enough to draw him out of his own thoughts. With a grimace he placed a paw on his head and closed his eyes coming to a stop while he waited for the pain to pass. He has spent the previous day sick in bed and though he had been feeling better this morning, his brother had insisted he stay home and rest before leaving for his own job. Valentin of course hadn’t listened to him. Since he had been feeling much better he saw no reason to stay cooped up inside of the den all day. He had better things to do than lay around all day even though he knew it likely would have been a good idea.
“Great” Valentin muttered under his breath as the pain eased a bit but did not go away. With a quick look around him he was able to spot a nearby park that sat in the middle of the residential area. The park was abandoned at the moment as all of the kids hurried to get home before dark. The small tom slowly made his way over to the park and climbed into a tunnel the kids often like to play on top of and inside during the day. It was a good place to rest until he felt well enough to make the rest of the way home. As he sat there he only hoped no trouble would find him. This area was considered Jellicle territory by most and though he had no problems with them personally he was fully aware that they were not very fond of Henches. While he leaned back against the side of the tunnel his eyes stared out of the opening, watching for any signs of approaching cats or humans.
